Osor: Hotels and Accommodations

Osor combines historical landmarks with paths through the landscape. The St Gaudentius Trail leads from Osor via Osoršćica to Nerezine; it is around 18 kilometres long and involves approximately six hours of walking. History

The historic urban fabric of Osor is protected in Croatia as registered cultural heritage under the designation Z-3081. Osor has a continuity of settlement from prehistoric times to the present day and flourished during the Roman period. The paving of the Roman forum lies beneath today’s town square. During this era, Osor was an important point on the eastern Adriatic shipping route.

Cres and Lošinj once formed a single island called Apsyrtides.

Culture

Osor Cathedral was built between 1463 and 1498. Its main altar housed the relics of Saint Gaudentius, the bishop and patron saint of Osor. The Abbey of St Peter in Osor was partially excavated and conserved; the parts uncovered include a three-nave basilica, adjoining monastic buildings and tombs.

The Osor Archaeological Collection displays predominantly objects from the early Roman imperial period on the first floor of the former town hall. It is housed in the former Renaissance town hall and the loggia; these premises were opened to the public in 1889. Its lapidarium and exhibitions cover material from prehistory through antiquity to the Middle Ages, including the Osor “Credo”, presented as the oldest surviving stone evidence of Christian faith.

The Osor Musical Evenings have been held since the second half of the 1970s in cooperation with the local community. The Osor Time Machine is a VR experience encompassing twelve locations in Osor. Visitors are asked to find a marten sculpture and stroke its tail for good luck.

Nature

The Osor Paleontological Collection is unique in the Cres-Lošinj archipelago and interprets its animal life from the period before the presence of humans. Osoršćica extends for approximately 20 kilometres along northern Lošinj; the summit can be approached from Osor. From the summit of Osoršćica, there are views across the Lošinj archipelago. Osoršćica is also known for its numerous caves.
