Omiš: Hotels and accommodations

Omiš combines a protected historic old town with the Cetina Canyon and a sandy beach within walking distance of the old town center. The old town of Omiš is protected as a cultural and historical entity in protection zone A under the designation Z-4066. Almost the full height of its eastern wall has been preserved. The present-day parish church was built and fully furnished in the first quarter of the 17th century.

Culture and history

One of the notable buildings is Starigrad-Fortica, an important monument of military architecture from the late 14th century with bastion extensions from the second half of the 16th century. Fortica is more than 500 years old and overlooks Brač, Hvar, Šolta, and the Cetina Canyon. The 13th-century Mirabela Fortress was used by the pirates of Omiš as a lookout point over the Brač Channel. It can be reached via stairs from the main gate of St. Michael's Parish Church and offers a view over Omiš.

The Omiš Town Museum displays archaeological, cultural, and historical artifacts from the surrounding area in its permanent exhibition. It is located next to the Eastern Town Gate at the entrance to the old town and develops creative programs and workshops for children. The Staro Omiško Cemetery was established as a municipal cemetery in the 16th century.

The Festival of Dalmatian Klapa was founded in 1967 and takes place annually in Omiš. It plays a role in preserving traditional klapa singing and Croatian cultural heritage. In July, the festival fills the streets and squares of the old town with Dalmatian klapa music.

Nature

The canyon of the Cetina River is a protected natural landscape and offers activities on the river such as canyoning, kayaking, rafting, panoramic boat rides, and walks along the riverbank. An old mill has been preserved at Radmanove mlinice, where it remains an attraction for visitors in the Cetina Canyon. The zipline adventure in the Cetina Canyon uses 2 kilometers of wire cables; some sections are more than 100 meters above the ground.

The Spring Trekking Cup is a series of hiking and trekking marathons held around Omiš every spring.

Beach

Velika plaža is a sandy beach within walking distance of Omiš's old town. Jet skis, boats, and kayaks are available for rent there, along with water trampolines, pedal boats, and beach volleyball.

Events

Gusarski dan is an all-day summer program for all generations and takes place several times during the summer. The program includes pirate activities for children, guided tours of the Omiš City Museum and Mirabela Fortress, a pirate parade through the center of Omiš, and an evening concert.
