Chmelná represents a combination of local history, religious buildings, hilly landscapes, and local traditions.

History and Culture

Chmelná has been documented since the Middle Ages; the first written mention of the village dates from 1375. The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk, a landmark of Chmelná, stands in the village square. It was built and consecrated in 1883, completely restored in 1998, and reconsecrated by Bishop Václav Malý.

A Jewish cemetery lies near Pravonín, 3 km west of Chmelná. It contains a grave connected with Gustav Mahler’s ancestors from the local Jewish community.

Landscape and Surroundings

Chmelná is situated in the typical hilly landscape of Central Bohemia at an altitude of 481 m above sea level. The Blaník Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Blaník) lies 4.5 km southwest of Chmelná.

The spring chapel of the Holy Trinity is located in Horky Forest. It was built in 1929 by the Catholic Youth Association and restored in 2012. The spring chapel is a popular destination for trips and walks throughout the year. A devotional service is held there on the Feast of the Holy Trinity.

Local Traditions

Every year, the pond below Chmelná is drained and fished, and a fish festival is held in Chmelná. The Chmelařinka band has been active in Chmelná since 1967 and performs at local celebrations and dances.
