Horoušany lies at the confluence of the Horoušanský potok and the Jirenský potok at an elevation of 216 metres. Waterside locations, a historic village centre and memorial sites shape the municipality’s visible points of reference.

Townscape and History

In the centre of Horoušany, the village square is home to an ensemble consisting of a stone bell-tower chapel and a cast-iron cross on a stone pedestal. Both elements are protected heritage monuments.

The brick-built, rectangular bell-tower chapel on the village square dates from the 19th century and effectively forms the centre of the municipality. The roughly triangular village square also features a sandstone cross with an engraved depiction of Christ on a high pedestal. It is dated 1812 and protected as an immovable cultural monument. At its upper end, the cross bears a Latin cross with a relief of the Crucifixion, as well as a scroll with the engraved inscription “INRI”.

Šámal Farmhouse, house number 22 on Baumanova Street near the former school, is considered one of the most interesting surviving examples of Horoušany’s original buildings. A memorial plaque there commemorates Otakar Šámal, who was murdered by the Nazis in 1942. At the intersection of Baumanova x U Mlýna, a memorial stone with a plaque commemorates Břetislav Bauman and his wife Emílie. The building below is a former barn belonging to Mill Farmhouse No. 11, where the couple lived and worked before and during the Second World War. Břetislav Bauman was arrested there by the Gestapo on 15 July 1942.

Northeast of Horoušany, a sandstone quarry was approved for the extraction of sandstone for the construction of a Prague cathedral before mid-July 1372. Stone from this area was later also transported to significant medieval buildings in Prague.

Water and Landscape

Horoušany is arranged around a pond whose right bank lies beside the village centre. North of the former manor farm there is a second village square with a children’s playground, a fountain and large willow trees.

Horoušanský rybník lies in the heart of the municipality of Horoušany in the Praha-východ District at an elevation of 216 metres and covers 2.8 hectares. The pond is currently used primarily for sport fishing; fishing at Horoušanský rybník is practised according to the “catch and release” principle.

Above Horoušany, partially preserved wetlands and reed beds can be found along the Jirenský potok.
