Kokořínský Důl is characterized by a gorge-like valley through which the Pšovka stream flows. The Kokořínský Důl Nature Reserve was designated in 1953.
Landscape and nature
The distinctive rock formations include the Kokořínské Pokličky. These are rock towers made of medium- to coarse-grained sandstones of the Jizera Suite, covered by a resistant layer of ferruginous sandstone through to conglomerate. They were formed by the selective weathering of the sandstones. Some of these rock formations reach heights of up to 12 metres.
From the starting point of the Kokořínské Pokličky, a short climb over wooden steps leads to a viewpoint.
Hiking trails and nature trail
The red-marked Máchova stezka runs along the entire length of Kokořínský Důl. Other marked hiking trails cross or meet the Máchova stezka there. The path from the last car park below Kokořín Castle to the castle is just under one kilometre long.
The Kokořínský důl nature trail is approximately 7 kilometres long and comprises 10 stations. Most sections of this nature trail are also suitable for cyclists.
History and culture
The local history includes the settlement of Kaninský Důl: it initially belonged to the municipality of Kokořín and ceased to exist on 1 January 1980. Kokořín Castle in Kokořínský Důl, municipality of Kokořín, in the Central Bohemian Region and Mělník District, has been protected as a national cultural monument since 1 January 2002.
