Culture and History

Kosmonosy brings together distinctive sacred buildings, a château and heritage-listed educational architecture within a compact historical setting. The Loreto Chapel was built between 1702 and 1708 to a design by the Italian architect Giovanni Alliprandi. At the centre of the Loreto complex is the Santa Casa, surrounded by cloisters and decorated with reliefs depicting the life of Mary, statues of prophets and reproductions of Italian frescoes.

Kosmonosy Château began as a Renaissance fortress commissioned by Adam Krajíř between 1560 and 1570. In the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, built between 1671 and 1673, you will encounter a building considered one of the first Baroque churches in the Mladá Boleslav area. Most of the sculptures and decorations inside the church were created by the Kosmonosy sculptor Josef Jelínek.

The Piarist College is part of the area’s historic educational landscape. The four-winged building complex encloses a central courtyard, and its covered walkways are opened by arcades. The complex remains protected as a cultural monument. Kosmonosy Grammar School also shaped the region’s cultural history: it developed into a cultural centre for the region, and the school produced, among others, the Baroque musicians Jiří Benda and Jiří Ignác Linka.

Museum Insights

Kosmonosy Château houses a museum dedicated to the history of the town, with a particular focus on the 20th century. The château park was opened to the public after the Second World War. Next to the château park lies the Altamira open-air prehistoric museum. It features reconstructions of prehistoric structures, including Celtic semi-subterranean houses, a bakery and a weaving workshop, a hay barn, a stable and a small field.

Nature

The Baba Nature Reserve lies in the vicinity of Kosmonosy. It covers approximately 122 hectares and consists mainly of deciduous woodland, including oak-hornbeam and beech forests.

Also in the vicinity of Kosmonosy, the Vrch Baba Nature Reserve protects a complex of near-natural forest and open-land ecosystems as well as exposed basalt dykes.

Trails and Open Space

The educational trail through the Vrch Baba Nature Reserve begins and ends in the centre of Kosmonosy-Horní Stakory. In 2019 and 2020, a natural swimming pond was proposed as the centrepiece of the Obora Park recreational complex in Kosmonosy.

Visiting Hours

The museum in Kosmonosy Château has seasonal opening hours from May to September: Saturdays and Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. The Altamira open-air prehistoric museum is open to the public from April to October on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
