Krnsko: Hotels and accommodations
In the territory of Krnsko, the Stránovský Viaduct spans the valley of the Strenický potok. The structure was built in 1864; passenger and freight traffic began there in the same year. The viaduct is considered the country's first railway concrete bridge and is one of its technical monuments.
Culture and history
The Church of St. George is probably the oldest building in Krnsko. A Romanesque structure already stood on its site in the 12th century; Jiří Vančura had the church rebuilt between 1547 and 1551. Its complex includes a rectory, a bell tower and a chapel. The buildings have largely been preserved or are being maintained by their owners.
The present-day château in Krnsko stands on the site of a former fortress, which the Vančuras converted into a Renaissance château. The château acquired its current appearance in 1727 through a Baroque reconstruction. It is privately owned and not open to the public. On the grounds of the former fortress, a habitable prismatic tower, cellars, palace buildings and a curtain wall have been preserved; a younger palace building, also rebuilt, dates from the Renaissance.
A Baroque sculptural group depicting St. John of Nepomuk stands by the rectory. Ignác Elger commissioned it in 1769, and it was created by the Prague sculptor Antonín Jedlička. A new bell tower was built in Horní Krnsko in 1867, and the bell from the former bell tower was transferred to it.
Nature and trails
The Krnská Trail comprises two hiking trails for visitors. They present the historical monuments and nature of the surrounding area, including its flora and fauna. Information boards provide route maps, photographs and brief descriptions of the sights and natural features. One route starts at Krnsko railway station.
One trail follows a field track along the Jizera and invites visitors to observe the local flora and fauna. Another hiking route passes the Kaštan hraběte Šporka memorial tree, which was declared a memorial tree in 2021. Shortly before the railway station, a route also passes the Chapel of St. Anne on the grounds of the former Kotkova toy factory.
