In Nová Ves-Ohrada, archaeological sites stand alongside the Staročeské máje tradition, which is still maintained today. The Ohrada archaeological area is classified as ÚAN I, meaning an area with archaeological finds or reasonably presumed archaeological finds. It is also recorded as a settlement of the Linear Pottery culture.
Culture, History and Landscape
The Nová Ves I–Ohrada archaeological site is associated with the Funnel Beaker culture and the Řivnáč culture. The archaeological sites in Ohrada also include a burial ground from the Celtic and Germanic periods. The settlement was founded as Schönweid and known locally as Ohrada.
The Ohrada archaeological area lies in fields south of the road from Kolín to Nová Ves. The central built-up part of Nová Ves I–Ohrada lies at the transition between a loess terrace and a wind-blown sand dune.
Traditions and Events
Staročeské máje is one of the traditions still maintained in Ohrada today. Its program includes a May procession held every three years, followed by an entertainment program. Ohradská beseda also organizes an evening entertainment program outdoors every year, as well as the traditional “velikonoční čára” on Easter Monday, April 6, in Ohrada village square.
As part of the host municipality of Nová Ves I, the recurring “Běhy krajem bitvy u Kolína” race takes place, with 4.5 km and 9 km routes starting at the nursery school in Nová Ves I.
