Sedlčany – Culture, Astronomy and Historic Sites

The exhibition displays archaeological finds from the Bronze Age, the Iron Age and the Celtic oppidum of Hrazany. It concludes with a memorial dedicated to the life and work of the composer Josef Suk.

The tradition of the historic ROSA festival in Sedlčany was revived in 1990. Since 1994, ROSA has been held regularly in June as Sedlčany’s town festival. The Stará radnice now houses the town museum; a Gothic column has been preserved in its cellar.

Kostel sv. Martina was first mentioned in writing on February 1, 1364. The church is an Early Gothic parish church from the third quarter of the 13th century, built by the construction workshop of Milevsko Monastery. Its Baroque furnishings include an altar from 1704 with a painting by J. Umlauf added later. Martina was surrounded by a massive defensive wall with buttresses that was probably up to six metres high.

Církvička stands on a hill on the northern side of Sedlčany. Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie, also known as Církvička, is a Baroque cemetery church built in 1732–1734 on the site of an older Gothic chapel.

The Hvězdárna Josefa Sadila Sedlčany offers public nighttime sky observations every Saturday. Direct observations with the large telescope are accompanied by projected images of the objects being observed, as well as explanations and discussions on various areas and topics in astronomy. The international Sukovy Sedlčany music festival is also held in Sedlčany every year.

The Sportovní areál Luční has a 560-metre-long track for inline skating and cycling. Younger visitors will find climbing structures and a pyramid there; teenagers and adults can use parkour obstacles and an outdoor gym. The different track lengths help you compare the extent of an exercise session.

The signposted Sukova pěší stezka starts in Sedlčany, is 11 km long and leads through the valley of the Mastník stream to Josef Suk’s birthplace in Křečovice. The Sukova pěší stezka also leads to the Drahoušek observation tower.
