Culture and History
Bishop Tobiáš of Bechyně granted Trhový Štěpánov town status in 1290. Remains of the walls and a stone from the castle gate dating from 1668 have been preserved from the former Štěpánov Castle.
The Church of St. Bartholomew dates from the period after the mid-14th century and features Neo-Gothic alterations. It contains Gothic wall paintings with busts of prophets in medallions. The grounds also include a cemetery wall with decorated gates and a niche chapel.
The Å tÄ›pánovsko Museum is housed in a building considered one of the oldest in Trhový Å tÄ›pánov. It can be visited by prior telephone appointment. The Josefa TÅ™ÃÅ¡ka Gallery was moved to the Å tÄ›pánovsko Museum in 2012 and opened to the public on 23 June.
The Jewish cemetery in Trhový Štěpánov is freely accessible. It contains gravestones dating from the early 18th century. The protected, very elongated grounds are enclosed by a stone perimeter wall with an entrance house.
