Máslojedy: Hiking Trails and Traces of 1866

Máslojedy is part of the microregion of the municipalities in the 1866 heritage zone. The first written mention of the village dates from 1241; at that time, Máslojedy belonged to the Prussian Knights of the Cross.

Nature

For planning purposes, one marked hiking route and two educational trails can be distinguished according to their respective trail characteristics. Marked hiking route 115 runs from Všestary railway station via Svíb and Máslojedy to Hořiněves railway station. The Josefov–Smiřice–Chlum 1866 educational trail runs through Josefov, Smiřice, Hořiněves, Máslojedy and Chlum. The Les Svíb educational trail takes visitors into Svíb Forest and the surroundings of the municipalities of Čistěves and Máslojedy, where the bloodiest part of the Prussian-Austrian War took place in 1866.

The different place names and landscape references help you consider the three options separately. When planning your own trip, you can organize the routes according to their landmarks: railway stations indicate a course, place names make several stops visible, and the forest reference creates a distinct landscape focus. This keeps the choice between the routes aligned with the specific priorities of the day.

Route 115 can be understood as a continuous course between its two railway stations, while the two educational trails use different anchors: Josefov–Smiřice–Chlum 1866 connects several places, while Les Svíb focuses on the forest and its municipal surroundings. The routes therefore differ not only in name, but also in the way they are spatially oriented.

Geographical setting

Svíb Hill lies in the immediate vicinity of Máslojedy. Also nearby are the hill “Hoříněveské lípy [Hořiněves]” and the hill “(V Pustých) [Račice nad Trotinou]”. The Church of Svatý Jiří lies in the wider regional surroundings. Also in the wider regional surroundings is Maxinec Mountain (MLázovický chlum).

History

The IR 47 + FJB 20 monument stands on the eastern side of Svíb, about 100 metres below the access road. It is a limestone pyramid on a pedestal and bears inscriptions in Czech and German.

At the western edge of Máslojedy, Špriňarův statek bears traces of cannonballs from the battle of 3 July 1866 on both gables. During the battle, the headquarters of the Austrian 4th Army Corps was located in the field between Špriňarův statek and Svíb Forest.

Máslojedy Military Cemetery lies in the northwestern part of the municipality on the road towards Hořiněves. An information board for the Josefov–Smiřice–Chlum 1866 educational trail is located at the military cemetery.
