Lužany nad Trotinou: Trotina Valley and Village History

The Trotina flows through the municipal area. It rises below Mount Zvičina and joins the Elbe in Lochenice. Both its source and mouth are therefore outside the place described here. Lužany itself is characterised by its location in the valley of this small river. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between staying in the village and taking excursions to other places in the river basin.

Lužany is connected to an educational cycling trail. Before setting out on a bike ride, check the current route and choose a section that suits you. In winter, the municipality describes the gently undulating surroundings as suitable for cross-country skiing. Whether a trip is possible depends on the actual snow and terrain conditions; check these before setting out.

The history of Lužany includes an earlier fortress. Between 1405 and 1410, the knight Hašek of the Střížek of Koloděj family lived there. Around 1478, his descendant Hašek Střížek of Lužany is named as its owner. These recorded names and dates are part of the village’s history. They do not describe a present-day museum or indicate that a castle site is currently open to visitors.

The origins of local associations date from a later period: the volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1889, and the Sokol gymnastics association was established in 1921. Both foundations belong to the more recent history of the village and complement its medieval records with the development of community life.

A memorial to the victims of the First World War, erected in 1923, stands at the crossroads in the centre. Seventy-eight men from Lužany were called up for military service. Thirteen of them died in the war or as a result of it. The memorial commemorates these residents and provides a specific point of interest for a walk focused on local history. The figures refer to the municipality and this war; they are not a general casualty count for the region.

The village has a municipal library. A renovated inn serves as a community centre for social and cultural activities. There is also a playground near the municipal office. If you would like to attend events or use local facilities, check the current opening hours and offerings in advance. When choosing your hotel, you can then consider whether proximity to the village centre or your planned excursions is more important to you.
