Skalice: Hotels and Accommodation

Skalice lies in a valley on both banks of the Skalický potok. The history of the village is reflected in early mentions, archaeological sites, and surviving evidence in the village area and along the roads.

History

The first written mention of Skalice dates from 1143, when Bishop Jan of Lochenice donated the district known as Skalice to the Premonstratensian Strahov Monastery in Prague. Archaeological finds prove that the Skalice area was already inhabited in the Early Hillfort Period. A fortress was built in Skalice, and its inhabitants had to guard the road from Hradec via Skalice to Smiřice, as well as a ford across the Elbe crossed by this road.

Archaeology and Landscape

The Pardědub archaeological site is located in the municipality of Skalice, in the cadastral areas of Skalice u Smiřic and Skalička nad Labem, and is classified as a hilltop settlement and fortification. It lies on a rise above the left bank of the Elbe. A remnant of the prehistoric fortification survives in the northeastern part as a depression and rampart visible as a slight rise in the terrain.

Culture

In front of house no. 13 in Skalice stands a stone crucifix with a statue of the Virgin Mary in a niche and an enclosure; next to it is a bell tower with a concrete structure. The historic village square in the western part of Skalice forms part of the local historic and cultural heritage. In the municipality of Skalice, the Church of Saint Wenceslas precinct in Číbuz, with its surrounding wall, and farmstead no. 24 in Skalička are listed as cultural monuments.

The elongated stone in the field near Dolní bahna on the road from Skalice to Smiřice bears two carved crosses and, below them, two broad axes placed with their blades facing each other, as well as an illegible inscription.

The municipality's annual cultural events include the Pivní slavnosti Skalice beer festival.

Routes

Marked cycle route no. 4283 runs from Smržov via Skalice to Lochenice. A marked red Way of Saint James hiking route runs along the Elbe.
