Cholenice combines a protected wetland area with remarkable architectural details and vibrant cultural traditions.
Nature
The Kojetín pond is located in the cadastral area of the municipality of Cholenice. It is part of the nature monument of the same name and the Rožďalovické rybníky Natura 2000 bird protection area (SPA, CZ20211010). At the same time, the pond is considered an important ornithological site.
Culture and History
The Chapel of St. Mark was built in 1776 on the site of an older late Baroque wooden structure. Its elliptical nave closes with a semicircular apse; its furnishings include a Rococo high altar and a Rococo pulpit. Since 1958, the chapel has been protected as a cultural monument.
At the foot of the path to the cemetery in Cholenice stands a stone cross. A theatrical amateur society founded in 1909 was also active in the village; it was known for its theatrical work not only in the Jičín area.
Tradition
Ples pod cylindrem is a traditional ball with a long history, held annually. It begins with the ceremonial entrance of men wearing top hats. The celebration also includes an interactive baptism ritual: men and women can be baptized if they arrange for a godmother or godfather to hold a top hat above the head of the person being baptized.
