Staré Hrady: Hotels and Accommodations

The historic complex of Staré Hrady lies in a gently undulating valley in the south of Český ráj, on the border between the Český ráj and Jičínsko tourism regions. Hrad a zámek Staré Hrady is open year-round.

Location and History

The Staré Hrady complex combines a Gothic castle featuring the work of the Parler workshop with an adjoining Renaissance château. The castle and château complex includes a forecourt with preserved figurative sgraffiti. The first written mention of the Stará fortress dates from 1340.

Fairy Tales and Château Rooms

Zámecké pohádkové sklepení is a fairy-tale trail that visitors can walk through independently at their own pace. It was designed in 2021 with sound and lighting effects.

The tour “Jak se žilo za císaře pána Františka Josefa I.” presents many thousands of exhibits depicting the lives of ordinary people, townspeople and the nobility during the heyday of the Habsburg monarchy.

The “POHÁDKA II.” tour in the Hradní pohádková půda features stories of the wizard Archibald I, with witches, magical grandmothers, ghosts, little spooks and goblins. In good weather, visitors can take part in a course on flying a magic broom there.

Zdravosvět a Dračí království offers the educational and entertaining “POHÁDKA III.” tour through the world of health in the château rooms. In the Dračí královská komnata, the dragon king Rozumbraďák XVI. welcomes visitors together with Queen Starostlinda and the dragon princesses Lajdalína, Trajdalína and Rozcaplína.

In the Čarodějná Bestyjola, witches and magical grandmothers care for live animals. A fairy-tale story is also told there explaining why the travel carriage is divided.

In the oldest part of the castle, visitors can taste Starohradská medovina.
