On the village square in Kovač, next to the bell tower, stands a Baroque sandstone statue of Saint Isidore dating from 1737. On 27 September 1996, it was declared a cultural monument by the Ministry of Culture.

Townscape and History

The fortified area of Kovač lies northwest of the village centre and is characterised by a distinctive ridge lined with mature trees.

On the outskirts of Kovač, in the direction of Butoves, a sandstone statue of Saint Charles Borromeo stands among lime trees on a tall cuboid pedestal. On a hill beside a field path in the direction of Konecchlumí stands a Baroque chapel of the Virgin Mary. It was built in 1730 at the expense of the farmer and former village judge Jan Jůza of Kovač. Behind Kovač, near the junction of the field paths towards Kabáty and Konecchlumí, stands a wayside shrine known as Boží muka with a sandstone balustrade.

Nature

Kovačská bažantnice is a 30.95-hectare nature reserve. It protects an old floodplain forest ecosystem with a diverse forest flora and old oak trees. Visitors are asked not to pick protected plants or leave any litter behind.

In the immediate vicinity of Kovač, about 800 metres southwest of the village, lies Rybník Strašidlo, a protected area for fire-bellied toads and their habitat. The Hluboký Kovač Natura 2000 site extends across the cadastral areas of Kovač and Třtěnice and also protects fire-bellied toad habitat. In the area around Kovač, the shallow, damp banks of Hluboký Kovač provide suitable habitats for amphibians, including fire-bellied toads.

The Kovačský jasan stands in the centre of Kovač next to the municipal office. The common ash has a trunk circumference of 530 cm and is 23 m tall.

Transport and Trails

Kovač railway station is part of the IREDO integrated transport system in the Královéhradecký and Pardubický regions and is located in Zone 587. KČT cycle route 4140 runs through Kovač.

A green-marked hiking trail leads from Kovač railway station to Konecchlumí and then either to Nová Paka or into the Chlum Woods.
