Česká Metuje: Hotels and Accommodation
The Metuje River flows through Česká Metuje in a deeply incised valley from north to south. The Vlásenky Stream is a larger right-bank tributary of the Metuje in Česká Metuje. The settlement was named after the Metuje River.
Nature
The entire municipal area of Česká Metuje lies within the Broumovsko Protected Landscape Area. On the left bank of the Metuje, in the immediate vicinity of the built-up area of Česká Metuje, lies the Pískovcové sloupky natural monument. Pískovcové sloupky consists of hourglass-shaped sandstone rock columns on the wall of an artificial exposure, a geomorphologically noteworthy debris slope with rock outcrops, and communities of near-natural forests and rocks.
Pískovcové sloupky is a remarkable geological formation created by karstification and selective weathering in more calcareous Upper Cretaceous sediments. Sports or recreational use of Pískovcové sloupky is not desirable because of the fragility of the sandstone columns.
Berkova lípa in Česká Metuje is a protected memorial tree. It stands south of Pískovcové sloupky behind house no. 21.
History and Culture
The first surviving written mention of the village of Metuje dates from 1406; at that time, it is mentioned as part of the Police estate. The expiatory cross „Smírčí kříž“ is a Greek cross with an inscription; on its reverse, a person fleeing from an axe is depicted. It stands on the left side of the road to Police.
