Kuks: Hotels and accommodation

Kuks is known for its former spa complex. History, Baroque art, and distinctive buildings are closely intertwined here, making the town easy to grasp as a destination.

History

The Kuks Hospital was founded at the beginning of the 18th century by Count František Antonín Špork as a facility providing care for elderly men who were looked after by the Brothers of Mercy. The Lázeňský dům spa building from 1704, restored from ruins, is a national cultural monument. The townscape also includes the historic “U zlatého slunce” inn, founded in 1699 and one of the dominant buildings in Kuks.

The Church of the Most Holy Trinity at Kuks Hospital has a distinctive octagonal floor plan and was consecrated in 1717. The Kaskádové schodiště connects the former spa building on the bank of the Elbe with the former château; former spa water once again flows over its cascading balustrade.

Culture

The originals of Braun’s sculptures of the Virtues and Vices can be viewed in the lapidarium of Kuks Hospital. Kuks Hospital offers exhibitions for visitors on history, Baroque art, and pharmacy. Kuks Hospital is home to the Baroque pharmacy “U Granátového jablka”, considered one of the oldest Baroque pharmacies in Europe.

The ground floor of Kuks Hospital houses the Sporckova Galerie vín wine gallery with a sales area. The Galerie loutek Jiřího Nachlingera regularly presents puppet theatre performances.

Surroundings

In addition to the Baroque sculptures, there are three lime trees planted in 1732 in front of the “U Zlatého slunce” inn and listed as memorial trees. The herb garden next to Kuks Hospital invites visitors to walk and relax in an authentic setting.

Braunův Betlém is a monumental group of outdoor Baroque sculptures from the 18th century in Nový les between Dvůr Králové and Kuks.

Kuks lies on the main road from Hradec Králové towards the Krkonoše Mountains and is easily accessible by train and bus.
