Schönthal: Hotels and Accommodation

The history of Krásné Údolí can be traced back to a precisely dated founding act: on 22 April 1488, Jindřich III z Plavna founded the town on the site of the older, dissolved village of Schickenplos.

History

On the southwestern outskirts of the town, the late Gothic parish church of St. Vavřinec was built in 1464 by converting and extending an older chapel. Around 1774, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style under Margravine Elisabetha Báden-Bádenská, based on the design of an unknown architect. Since 2004, the dilapidated church has been undergoing extensive reconstruction in stages.

Culture

A late Baroque sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1780 stands in the central square. The square itself is characterized by a park.

A cast-iron cross at the Church of St. Vavřinec is freely accessible. On the slope in front of the church’s northern entrance façade, there is also an ornately decorated pseudo-Gothic cast-iron cross dating from 1861; it stands above the square on the southern edge of Krásné Údolí.

West of Krásné Údolí, a stone reconciliation cross dating from the 14th to the 16th century stands on the left side of a field path on a gentle hill. During its restoration, the broken-off section was reattached in its original place.

Landscape

The Natura 2000 site EVL 5448 Mezi rybníky is located within the administrative area of Krásné Údolí. Krásné Údolí and the settlement of Odolenovice lie within the Slavkovský les state-protected area.

The cadastral areas of Krásné Údolí and Odolenovice are characterized by forests along their natural boundaries; at lower elevations, there are areas used for agriculture.

Routes

State road I/20, which connects Plzeň and Karlovy Vary, runs through Krásné Údolí. In 2016, the Skokovská stezka pilgrimage route also passed through the town on its stage from Nežichov to Toužim. A visit to the Church of St. Vavřinec was planned there whenever possible.
