Großhammer: Hotels and accommodations

Großhammer lies on the southeastern edge of the Jizera Mountains. The 787-meter-high Muchov has been developed as a natural lookout point and offers views of the Jizera Mountains, the Krkonoše Mountains, the Ještěd ridge and the Bohemian Paradise.

Water, rocks and trails

The Kamenice flows through Velké Hamry. The distinctive rocks of Muchov consist of two-mica granite, known as Tanvald granite. The Terezínka rock lookout can be reached from the Kamenice Valley; 55 steps lead up to it, and from there you can enjoy views of the ridges of the Jizera Mountains.

A footpath from Velké Hamry to Tanvald avoids the heavy road traffic either via Popelnice or through the forest above the railway line via Marjánka. From Svárov, a footpath also leads through Parýz, along the valley by the Ješkrabec stream, to Rejdice.

Culture and history

The former names Hamersko, Dolení Hamr and Hoření Hamr are derived from iron hammers that probably stood there in the 13th and 14th centuries. The monument to the Svárov strike commemorates the 1870 textile workers' strike; it was erected in 1963 and is protected as a cultural monument in Velké Hamry.

The Pietà is located in Mezivodí. It is a late Baroque niche chapel in Velké Hamry II, at the junction from the main road to Muchov. It is an artistically and culturally valuable monument of a folk character and is listed in the central register of immovable cultural monuments. The life-size Pietà ensemble stands among chestnut trees opposite the factory.

Chapels and townscape

The Chapel of Saint Wenceslas in Velké Hamry II is a late Baroque niche chapel at the junction from the main road to Muchov. It is one of the preserved historic monuments of Velké Hamry and dates from the 18th century.

Christmas and Easter Masses are held annually in the Chapel of Saint Anne, as well as a Mass commemorating Jan Hus on July 5 and an annual Christmas concert by a children's choir. Masses are regularly celebrated in the Church of Saint Wenceslas.

Near the square stands a two-story corner residential building with an L-shaped floor plan, gabled roofs and a flat, tower-like two-story oriel on volute brackets with a sheet-metal onion dome.

Technology and industrial history

The Energy Museum is located on the grounds of the Miček carpentry workshop at Bohdalovice 79, Velké Hamry–Mezivodí. It displays a Francis turbine with a generator from 1907, a model of a biogas plant, and various turbines and generators shown in cutaway views. It also offers practical demonstrations on generating renewable energy and educational programs for schools.

Construction of the spinning mill in Mezivodí, formerly known as Liebigovy závody, began in 1907; operations started in 1908, and the building retains its original appearance.
