Šišma: Geology, Nature and History

Šišma begins with a geological site: the disused Šišma quarry exposes rock types and textures of the Culm facies. Different structures and changes in material emerge on the exposed rock surfaces, making the quarry’s geological character immediately visible.

The Lesy u Bezuchova protected area safeguards extensively mown meadows from the lowlands to the foothills (Arrhenatherion, Brachypodio-Centaureion nemoralis), oak-hornbeam forests of the Galio-Carpinetum association, and mixed ash-alder alluvial forests (Alno-Padion, Alnion incanae, Salicion albae). The protected area therefore contains several clearly distinct habitat types side by side: open meadows, forests characterized by oaks and hornbeams, and wet alluvial forests with ash and alder trees. The range from the lowlands to the foothills describes the differing landscape characteristics within the protected area.
