Šternberk: Hotels and Accommodation
Šternberk combines historic buildings with trails and educational attractions that can be described in very concrete terms.
Culture and History
The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is 65 metres long, the nave is 30 metres high, and the towers are 60 metres high. Šternberk Castle features a preserved cylindrical tower and remnants of the fortifications of the main palace. A visitor guide called “Klikotoče” is available for the Šternberk Urban Heritage Zone.
The Šternberk Monastery presents history, architecture, visual arts and music from the Gothic period to the present day. The monastery offers guided tours of the J. K. Handke Picture Gallery, an exhibition on the history of the town, the tower clock, a wine gallery and the monastery cellars. The tours include demonstrations of various musical instruments, including organ performances in the church. The first independent hill climb race, called Ecce Homo, was held in 1921.
Nature and Trails
The Těšíkovská kyselka in Těšíkov, a district of Šternberk, is an iron-rich mineral water spring documented as a natural carbonated spring since as early as 1669. The area around the Těšíkovská kyselka serves as a starting point for hiking trails in the foothills of the Nízký Jeseník.
The Prabába educational trail offers an easier 1.5-kilometre route and a more demanding 4.5-kilometre route; both have a relatively small elevation gain. The trail has nine stations covering forest life, regional history, and local tales and legends. It begins and ends in Šternberk at the crossroads near the former Na kiosku restaurant.
The Hvězdná cycle path, number 6104, connects Olomouc and Šternberk over 14 kilometres and is suitable for cyclists and inline skaters of all ages.
Knowledge and Family Activities
Expozice času covers the period from the formation of the universe to atomic clocks. The permanent Expozice času exhibition is aimed primarily at children, young people and families. Visitors can test their knowledge of the solar system in an interactive game and use models to explore how mechanical clocks work.
Tyršovy sady is home to the “Město a hvězdy” playground, with two rope climbing frames and an unusual climbing wall.
