The Church of Saint John the Baptist and the Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel in Bystré is considered the oldest pilgrimage church of the Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel in the Czech Republic.

Culture and history

The present-day appearance of the Church of Saint John the Baptist and the Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel dates back to 1726. Its altar and all the sculptures inside are made of wood, but look as if they were made of stone. In the square in front of this church stands the Baroque statue of Our Lady of Sorrows by J. Pacák, dating from 1725.

The Baroque town hall of Bystré was built between 1716 and 1719. The Bystré château was built between 1586 and 1590.

Museums and guided tours

The Bysterské minimuzeum “Brtounova chalupa” is located in house no. 137, which dates from 1723. Guided tours of this museum and the Church of Saint John the Baptist are available on request. In the shoemaking mini-museum in the so-called Brtounova chalupa, visitors can learn about a shoemaker’s work from the ground up.

The Velký městský okruh begins at the Church of Saint John the Baptist and follows a hiking trail towards Panský les. It leads into nature and connects important landscape features, chapels, and smaller sacred structures.
