Makov lies at the foot of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, 10 kilometres west of Litomyšl. The area around Makov is varied, has the character of a hilly landscape and lies at an elevation of 380 to 490 metres above sea level.

Past and Present

The first written mention of Makov dates from 1349. The origins of the settlement are traced back to the end of the 1st millennium; evidence of this includes the discovery of a stone axe and a rider's spur.

The Church of St Vitus is Makov's dominant landmark and has a 42-metre-high tower. It presumably dates back to the beginning of the 2nd millennium, was originally a Romanesque building and has been rebuilt several times. The Church of St Vitus in Makov also contains a painting by Mikoláš Aleš.

Memorial Sites

The cenotaph for Josef Síč, who came from Makov, commemorates the fact that he was active in France and England during the Second World War. A memorial plaque for the Russian partisan Petr is located in the Sokolovna in the northern part of Makov. The registered war grave of the Russian partisan Petr is located in the cemetery surrounding the Church of St Vitus in the centre of Makov. The cenotaph for Josef Síč stands in Makov in front of the cemetery wall and the Church of St Vitus, next to the monument to the victims of the First World War.
