Domažlice Square is lined with architecturally valuable Gothic and Renaissance houses featuring arcades and vaulted entrance halls known as mázhaus, as well as later Baroque and Rococo gables.
History and Culture
The Domažlice Tower has three bells. In the past, they announced the time of day, church services, deaths, fires and other events.
The Chodský hrad is home to the Muzeum Chodska, with exhibitions on the history of Domažlice, the Chod region and the surrounding area. The exhibition “Pozor hranice! Historie hrou” focuses on the coexistence of Czechs and Germans in the Český les border region.
The J. Jindřich Museum displays numerous ethnographic objects collected in the Chod region, as well as an extensive collection of paintings on glass.
The Gothic structure of the Klášterní kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie was built in the 14th century. The church was partially destroyed during the Hussite Wars; between 1746 and 1752, it was rebuilt in its present Baroque form.
The Kulturní centrum – Pivovar Domažlice is located in a reconstructed historic malt house building dating from the late 19th century. Visitors can taste beer at the Městský pivovar Domažlice; the brewing tradition in Domažlice was revived after almost 25 years.
Events
The Chodské slavnosti take place every August in Domažlice and are associated with a traditional pilgrimage to nearby Vavřinec. They are among the oldest and largest ethnographic festivals in the Czech Republic.
Trails and Landscape
The M 2 (1411) tourist route begins in Domažlice’s main square, continues via Nevolice and Mrákov to Všeruby, where it connects to the German hiking trail marking system.
The Sochařská stezka begins at Chodský hrad in Domažlice, leads to the Baldov ridge and forms an open-air sculpture gallery there.
In the immediate vicinity of Domažlice, the fully accessible 7 km wheelchair trail in Přírodní park Zelenov runs from a car park around the medieval pond system of the zelenovské rybníky to the shelter at Strakovský rybník and back.
