Kašperské Hory: Hotels and Accommodation
Kašperské Hory combines tangible evidence of Šumava history with natural history topics and historic buildings. The Šumava Museum displays a collection of Late Gothic sculptures from the period around the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. It also has a permanent natural history exhibition covering zoology, botany, geology and nature conservation. The historical exhibition also includes evidence of gold mining and gold processing in the Šumava region.
Culture
The churches include the Kostel sv. Markéty, a three-nave Gothic basilica built in the mid-14th century with a Baroque interior from the 18th century. The Kostel sv. Mikuláše is located 1.5 km from the town centre and contains Early Gothic frescoes and a painted beamed ceiling dating from 1700.
Another insight into local craft and representational culture is the cabinet nativity scene of Kašperské Hory. It was hand-carved and painted by local woodcarvers and is displayed year-round in the town hall exhibition room.
History
The historic gold ore processing site in Kašperské Hory was established after discoveries made around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. It was used for roasting gold ore, which could then be transported to crushing plants and gold mills.
The Kašperskohorská větev of the historic Zlatá stezka was its youngest branch. It was established in the mid-14th century on the orders of Emperor Charles IV and led from Kašperské Hory via Kvilda and Freyung to Passau. The Czech section of the historic Zlatá stezka is equipped with information boards.
Nature
The Kašperské Hory Information Centre introduces visitors to the nature of Šumava National Park and the Šumava Protected Landscape Area. Its permanent exhibition focuses on water in the Šumava landscape and covers peat bogs, wetlands, glacial lakes and watercourses, as well as their importance for water retention in the landscape.
During the summer season, the Kašperské Hory Information Centre mainly organises excursions focusing on botany and birdwatching.
