Velký Bor: Hotels and Accommodation

Velký Bor preserves several distinctive traces of its history at the Church of Saint John the Baptist. The church, built in the 13th century, retains fragmentary original wall paintings. Three bricked-up windows with remnants of trefoil tracery and an early Gothic portal leading to the sacristy vestibule have also been preserved.

Church and Local History

The tower of the Church of Saint John the Baptist contains five bells, including the more than 500-year-old Jan bell. The Romanesque castle chapel of Velký Bor is attached to the Baroque hospital.

In 1765, Princess Marie von Löwenstein had a hospital with a chapel built on the foundations of the demolished castle of Velký Bor for retired officials of the estate. The municipality bought the former hospital building in 1869 and established a school there. Another historical trace is the stone wayside cross Kříž u Benatky in Velký Bor: it is made of granite and bears the barely legible year 1843.

Landscape and Surroundings

The Podkostelák Pond reflects the picturesque ensemble of Velký Bor, with the elevated site of the former castle, the church, and the houses standing along the shore.

The Boubínský Hill [Horažďovice - Horažďovická Lhota], Radílec Hill [Chanovice-Dobrotice], and Stolavec Hill [Horažďovice - Třebomyslice] are located in the vicinity of Velký Bor. In the wider regional area are the ruins of the Radomysl Mediumwave Radio Mast and Buzrakov Mountain (Plánický hřeben).

Railway Path and Cycle Routes

Several cycle routes pass through Velký Bor and its immediate surroundings. Velký Bor railway station lies south of the village, less than two kilometres away on the road to Horažďovice.

From the railway station, a path leads between fields to the Březový potok, then to its confluence with the Velkoborský potok, and continues along the left bank of this stream into the village of Velký Bor.
