Klatovy District: Hotels and Accommodation
Klatovy District combines impressive castle history with the landscapes of the Šumava. Rabí was founded by the Lords of Rýzmberk in the first half of the 14th century and served defensive purposes in the upper Otava region. Those wishing to book a hotel in Klatovy District can then continue searching for accommodation.
Culture and History
A tour of Rabí Palace includes preserved medieval palace rooms, castle models, archaeological finds, exhibitions of stove tiles, a viewing terrace, and cellars. At Švihov, the castle was built as an artificial island with two defensive moats fed by the Úhlava River.
The national cultural monuments in Klatovy District include Červené Poříčí Chateau, Rabí Castle, Švihov Castle, Týnec Chateau, Velhartice Castle, and the Vchynicko-Tetovský Canal.
Velhartice is associated with the secret safekeeping of the Bohemian Crown Jewels in the 15th century. There, a large stone bridge connects the castle courtyard with a separate residential and defensive tower. The open-air museum of folk architecture in Velhartice has been open to visitors since 2009. The complex includes valuable buildings relocated from the foothills of the Šumava.
Landscape and Surroundings
Prášilské Lake was formed approximately 10,000 years ago by a glacier. The surroundings of Klatovy District include Svatobor, Vosík (Hartmanice-Javoříc), Javorná, and Vysoký hřebet. The wider regional surroundings of Klatovy District also include the Lohberg Bavarian Forest Wildlife Park.
Getting There and Routes
The Plzeň–Klatovy–Železná Ruda railway line runs through Klatovy District. Direct buses from Klatovy and Sušice travel to Velhartice; the bus stop is approximately one kilometre from the castle entrance. Blue and red hiking trails, as well as several cycling routes, pass through Velhartice.
Sightseeing and Practical Information
A self-guided visit in Velhartice includes an interactive exhibition in the former château brewery and a viewpoint overlooking the Ostružná valley. The château tour includes the cistern, cellars, the interiors of the former Rajský Palace, the view from the large stone bridge, and the Putna defensive tower.
The Švihov car park is approximately 100 metres from the castle; the level footpath takes about one to two minutes. Bicycle parking and basic repair equipment are available in the outdoor area. A visit to the Švihov tower includes projections and views over the town and the Úhlava Valley.
In Švihov, there is a self-guided route to Cinderella’s shoe, as well as a boat ride through the moat and around the château; eight stations explain the defensive system.
