Mnichov lies in the southern Český les in the valley of the Pivoňka stream, 2 km southwest of the town of Poběžovice. The Český les Nature Park extends into the municipality. The Pivoňka flows through Mnichov from south to northeast towards Poběžovice; north of the village, the Mlýnský potok, a tributary of the Pivoňka, flows through the area.
Location and Landscape
The terrain rises steeply southeast of Mnichov to the 607 m-high Čertovka. To the west, it rises gradually to the 595 m-high U lesíka mountain, which belongs to the Pivoňské hory.
Culture and History
The Chapel of the Holy Trinity stands in Mnichov village square. It was built in 1728.
The former Augustinian monastery in Pivoň is located in the municipality of Mnichov, in the Pivoň district and the Pivoň cadastral area. It is a national cultural monument. The monastery was founded in the 13th century. After the monastery was dissolved and converted into a château, it acquired its present appearance through a High Baroque reconstruction. The Early Gothic presbytery of the monastery church is considered the oldest known purely Gothic building in the Czech Republic that is completely free of Romanesque stylistic elements. The Augustinian monastery is currently closed to the public due to renovation work.
The Starý Herštejn castle ruins are located in the Vranov u Mnichova cadastral area, approximately 2 km southwest of the village of Mnichov. Starý Herštejn was probably founded before 1266 and fell into ruin at the beginning of the 16th century.
The first written mention of the village of Mnichov dates from 1550. As a result of the Munich Agreement, Mnichov was annexed to Nazi Germany from 1938 to 1945.
Cycle Route
The 31 km-long cycle route 2281 passes through Mnichov and connects Nemanice with Bělá nad Radbuzou.
