Poleň: Hotels and Accommodation

The historic centre of Poleň is designated as a village heritage zone. Notable architectural and artistic monuments include the Church of All Saints, with its Gothic core dating from the 14th century, which was structurally altered in the 16th and 18th centuries. It houses a copy of an image of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child from the workshop of Lucas Cranach. The original Poleň Madonna is a 16th-century oil painting on wood and is held in the National Gallery in Prague.

Culture and History

The Chapel of St Salvator was built in 1789 and serves as the crypt of the priests of Poleň. The Church of St Markéta dates from the first half of the 14th century; today, only its surrounding walls remain. The historian Josef Dobrovský liked to sit beneath the Poleň lime tree.

Even vanished buildings are part of the town's history. The former Pasička water mill was a typical Šumava mill, was mentioned as early as 1379, and has since disappeared. Of the former fortress at today's House No. 13 in Poleň, only the cellars remain; in 1820, a manorial agricultural building was erected in its place.

The surroundings of Poleň include Běleč, Úliště [Javor - Loučany] and Jezvinec; all three are mountains. Doubrava [Dolany-Řakom], a hill, is also located nearby. A red-marked hiking trail runs through Poleň.

Regional Cycle Route 305 runs via Klatovy, Tajanov, Poleň, Lučice, Chocomyšl, Koloveč, Srbice and Hlohovčice to Staňkov.

The Strašidelná stezka in Poleň is held regularly at the beginning of November. The Bayerwald-Tierpark Lohberg, a zoo, is located in the wider region surrounding Poleň.
