Culture and History

Stráž nad Nežárkou Castle is a Baroque feudal manor house. It was created through the extensive remodeling of a Gothic castle founded in the 13th century by the Vítkovci family. The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul was first mentioned as a parish church in 1361.

The Chapel of St. Michael was probably added to the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul during the 1413 renovations. The current form of the Bell Tower dates from 1861; it was probably originally a defensive bastion of the castle’s outer bailey.

The fountains include two on Ema Destinnová Square and one on Malé náměstí; they date from the early 19th century. Performances have been held in the theater hall of the community center since 1880, and theater is still performed there today. Ema Destinnová performed on the stage of the local theater and was appointed an honorary member of the theater association of Stráž nad Nežárkou in 1917. At the height of her fame, she settled at Stráž nad Nežárkou Castle.

The Jewish cemetery “Stráž nad Nežárkou – Pístina” lies approximately 2 km west of Stráž nad Nežárkou at the edge of the forest. The cemetery is locked; a key can be borrowed from the municipal office of Stráž nad Nežárkou.
