Culture and History

The Cistercian monastery in Vyšší Brod was founded in 1259 by the Rožmberk family. The first written reference to Vyšší Brod dates from the founding charter of the Cistercian monastery, dated 1 June 1259. The origins of the town are connected with trade along one of the oldest routes linking Bohemia with the Danube region.

The Church of St Bartholomew and its associated cemetery in Vyšší Brod are cultural monuments. The monastery complex includes a medieval fortified compound with the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The Cistercian monastery is a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic and offers several tour routes, one of which includes this monastery church.

The Poštovní muzeum NTM is also located within the Cistercian monastery complex. It presents the development of postal and telecommunications services as well as the history of postal traffic.

Pilgrimage and Routes

Maria Rast is a Marian pilgrimage site with a group of buildings and a Way of the Cross. With 14 stations, it leads from the parish church in Vyšší Brod to Maria Rast and was established in 1898.

Today, Maria Rast forms part of the newly established Opatská stezka tourist circular route. In the wooded area behind the monastery, it connects various objects created or adapted by Vyšší Brod Monastery, including an artificial water channel supplying the monastery, the waterfalls of Saint Wolfgang, and a hammer mill.

Nature and Water

A navigable section of the Vltava begins in Vyšší Brod.

The Čertova stěna-Luč nature reserve is located in the vicinity of Vyšší Brod and features a deep river canyon carved by the Vltava. There, the Vltava flows through a natural channel filled with massive granite blocks and characteristic potholes; this section is known as Čertovy proudy.
