Dolní Věstonice: Hotels and accommodation

Dolní Věstonice is closely associated with the Venus of Dolní Věstonice: Karel Absolon discovered it here in 1925; the figurine is approximately 11 centimetres tall. The village is also associated with the discovery of the oldest woven textile, as well as ceramics made from fired clay and ash.

Culture and archaeology

At Dolní Věstonice I, Karel Absolon began the first systematic archaeological research into Palaeolithic sites below Pálava in 1924, under the auspices of the Moravian Museum. Dolní Věstonice I preserves the remains of a hunter settlement, numerous human and animal figurines, as well as jewellery and anthropological finds. It also contains the oldest evidence of new technologies, such as the production of ceramics and textiles.

Dolní Věstonice III contains finds from the stone industry that attest both to settlement by mammoth hunters and to traces of an older settlement of the Aurignacian culture dating from 40,000 to 35,000 years ago. In the immediate vicinity of Dolní Věstonice are a Great Moravian hillfort site and an extensive burial ground.

At the northern edge of Dolní Věstonice, at the Vysoká zahrada site, are the remains of a rampart and the ground plan of a church that stood there until the beginning of the 13th century. The Hutterite wine cellars form a small square ensemble at the so-called Husí plácek and can still be seen there today. Near Dolní Věstonice II, visitors can see the so-called Calendar of the Ages, a massive loess profile documenting Palaeolithic settlement.
