Břeclav District: Hotels and accommodations

Pohansko is an archaeological reserve and is considered one of the important early medieval Slavic archaeological sites. The fortified settlement from the 9th century covers 28 hectares. Pohansko therefore appeals to travelers interested in early history.

Nature

In the southernmost part of Moravia, Břeclav District combines floodplain forests, white cliffs, vineyards, fields, historic monuments, and folk traditions.

The district stretches across the Dyje–Svratka Valley, the Central Moravian Carpathians, and the Lower Morava Valley. The Pálava Hills form the dominant highland. Lednické rybníky is a national nature reserve covering more than 1,000 hectares and used for fish farming. At the same time, it is one of the important breeding sites for waterfowl in the district.

The Nové Mlýny waterworks covers a water surface of 3,232 hectares below the Pálava Hills. The Pálava Protected Landscape Area is a biosphere reserve with rare plants and animals, as well as a distinctive cultural landscape shaped by the relationship between people and nature.

Culture

Pohansko Chateau, built in the Empire style, houses an exhibition documenting local archaeological research. Dolní Věstonice is associated with the archaeological discovery of the Venus of Věstonice.

Winegrowing has a long tradition in the Břeclav region. Folk festivals include Podluží v písních a tancích in Tvrdonice and Kraj beze stínu in Krumvíř.

Krojované hody are a strong tradition in Velké Bílovice, Vrbice, Rakvice, Lanžhot, and Moravská Nová Ves. Mikulov’s historic medieval town center has been an urban heritage conservation area since 1952.

The Lednice–Valtice Cultural Landscape was created by combining the estates of Lednice and Valtice with the neighboring Břeclav estate. It includes a historic network of roads and scenic trails. The district maintains its folk dance and folk song traditions through folklore ensembles and festivals.

Getting around

There are signposted cycling routes in the Břeclav area and the Lednice–Valtice region, leading to tourist attractions. The tourist information center in Břeclav rents bicycles and provides information about the town and the region.

The Břeclav–Pohansko–Lány educational trail is 7 kilometers long and accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. The 2-kilometer Entové educational trail passes through floodplain forest to Pohansko Chateau.

The 6.5-kilometer Lužní les educational trail runs from Břeclav to Janův hrad near Lednice. The Lednické rybníky educational trail begins at the dam of Mlýnský rybník.

The Lednice–Valtice Landscape features a 60-meter-high minaret tower offering a viewpoint over the estate. Boat trips in the Lednice–Valtice Landscape can reach the ruins of John’s Castle.
