Rudlice Between Nature and History

The first written reference to Rudlice dates from 1365. The village acquired particular historical significance in 1821, when Rudlice became a center of the last peasant uprising in the Bohemian lands. In 1921, one hundred years later, the residents of Rudlice commemorated the leaders of this uprising with a monument. The uprising year 1821 and the monument year 1921 thus represent the event and its later commemoration.

A smelting works once stood at the site now known as Jelínkův mlýn – Šuškovec. Before its reconstruction, the former Šmídlův mlýn was used as a water-powered forge; waterwheels drove the blacksmiths’ hammers. The Rudlice bell tower is also an important historic building of folk architecture. The bell tower adds another building in Rudlice to the historic mill sites. Iron ore was formerly mined in the surroundings of Rudlice, while the smelting works and forge were tied to specific mill sites.

The protected Rudlické kopce area encompasses grass- and herb-rich communities with steppe elements, as well as protected plant and animal species. Unlike the wooded valley, open communities are the focus there. Nature enthusiasts therefore encounter two specific landscapes: the valley beside the stream and the open areas of Rudlické kopce.

Cycle Route 481 runs from Znojmo via Přímětice, Hluboké Mašůvky, Plaveč, Rudlice, Vevčice and Černín to Jevišovice. The cycling tour “Through the Picturesque Countryside Around Jevišovice” also passes through Vevčice and Rudlice. Rudlice lies in the sequence of places on the cycling route between Plaveč and Vevčice; Znojmo is the starting point and Jevišovice the destination. One route is numbered, while the other has its own name.

What historic detail can be found at Šmídlův mlýn?

On the southeast-facing gable, a round al-secco painting can be seen on dry lime plaster that has already partially flaked off. It depicts two blacksmiths at an anvil and bears the year 1756. The year belongs to this round painting at the mill site.
