Horní Jiřetín: Hotels and Accommodations

Horní Jiřetín takes you from the original Baroque furnishings of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and historic monuments to routes through the reclaimed landscape of the former ČSA open-pit mine.

Culture

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary features original and highly valuable Baroque furnishings. A visit should also include climbing to the viewing terraces on the main tower, offering views over all of Jiřetín and the surrounding area.

Jezeří Chateau developed from a Gothic castle dating from the 14th century, first into a Renaissance chateau and later into a Baroque chateau. It was opened to the public in June 1996.

The lower part of Horní Jiřetín contains four valuable Baroque sculptures: the Calvary sculpture, the statue of Saint Lawrence, the group of figures of Saint George, and the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. All four were professionally restored over the past fifteen years and are protected as immovable cultural monuments. The equestrian statue of Saint George fighting a dragon is an early Baroque work from 1691 by Bernard Dörl.

The historic surroundings also include the industrial monument “Jámová budova a těžní věž C2 s oběhem vozů”. It is located in Dolní Jiřetín and was placed under protection by a decision of the Czech Ministry of Culture.

The Horní Jiřetín–Jezeří cycling route is seven kilometres long, mostly runs on easy terrain, and is suitable for mountain bikes and trekking bikes; there is a steeper climb at the end.
