Geography

Most District includes the Krušné hory mountains, a southeastern spur of the České středohoří, as well as the Žatecká upland and the Most Basin. The highest point in Most District is Loučná, at 956 metres above sea level.

Nature

Most Lake is a reclaimed lake created by flooding the former Ležáky brown coal mine near Most. The lake covers 311 hectares, is approximately 2.5 kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres wide, and reaches a maximum depth of 59 metres.

The Fláje Dam is located near Český Jiřetín and was built on the Flájský potok to provide a water supply. Zlatník is a 521-metre-high, forested phonolite peak offering views of the České středohoří and the Krušné hory.

Surroundings

The area surrounding Most District includes Osek Monastery, Bořeň [Bílina-Újezd], Vlčí hora, Stropnik, and Medvědí Skála. The wider regional area also contains Purschenstein, Sukoslav, and Hradek Oltářík.

Culture

Most’s late Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was moved 841 metres in 1975 using an unusual relocation technique. Its interior contains rich paintings and sculptures, as well as an exhibition of Gothic and Renaissance art from northwest Bohemia. Alongside the church, Most’s Baroque hospital and the Church of the Holy Spirit form a historic monument complex.

Five Art Nouveau houses on Smetanova Street in Litvínov, built between 1901 and 1906, stand next to the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel and Voigtovy sady. The Podkrušnohorské Technical Museum focuses on underground and open-pit mining, coal processing and other uses of coal, as well as the chemical industry in the brown coal basins of northwest Bohemia.

From the tower of Hněvín Castle, there are views over Most, the volcanic peaks of the České středohoří, and the Krušné hory.

Activities

The Matylda recreation area in Most has a 39-hectare natural body of water designated for outdoor swimming. It also offers cycle paths and a four-kilometre asphalt track for inline skating and cycling.

The ski resort in Český Jiřetín has three pistes and four lifts. There is also a 100-metre natural toboggan run leading towards the Church of Saint John the Baptist.
