Kadaň: Hotels and Accommodation
Kadaň’s historical character is particularly evident in its castle, fortifications, and religious buildings.
Culture and History
The originally early Gothic Royal Kadaň Castle stands on a prominent gneiss rock above the Ohře River. Its preserved Gothic cellars house a museum exhibition on the history of the castle. The best-preserved cellar areas can be visited on guided tours featuring the exhibition “History and Development of Kadaň Castle”.
The Franciscan Monastery of the Fourteen Holy Helpers is a national cultural monument and is known for its unique wall paintings and a rare cell vault. The monastery offers four tour routes, which can only be completed with a guide. The Franciscan Gardens can also be visited; they include vineyards as well as several domestic animals.
The Kadaň City Museum manages five cultural heritage sites with six permanent exhibitions, which can be visited during the main season. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Kostel Povýšení sv. Kříže) is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and preserves a Gothic core beneath its present Baroque appearance. Concerts are regularly held in the church.
The white Gothic town hall tower of Kadaň dates from the early 16th century, is 53.75 metres high, and is the tallest building in the city. Its viewing gallery offers extensive views of the surrounding area and helps visitors find their bearings in Kadaň.
The fortifications of the royal town of Kadaň are among the best-preserved urban fortifications of their kind. Katova ulička runs through these fortifications: it is 66.1 centimetres wide and leads to the executioner’s house.
By the River and on the Move
The Nábřeží Maxipsa Fíka is a pedestrian and cycling promenade with children’s attractions such as flying bicycles, a hamster wheel, and water attractions. The manually operated “Velryba” ferry allows visitors to cross the Ohře River.
The fourth section of the Ohře Cycle Path begins in Kadaň. A bike ride from Kadaň follows the banks of the Ohře across the Lávka Víta Brandy bridge towards Rašovice and onwards to Klášterec nad Ohří. The tower of the Svatá brána has been open to the public since 2016 and offers a different perspective of Kadaň.
Local Flavours
At the Vinobraní in Kadaň, visitors can sample Burčák as well as fresh grape must made on site from grapes grown in the monastery vineyards.
