Culture and History

The historic centre of Chomutov has been an urban heritage zone since 1992. The Chomutov museum complex includes the Church of Saint Catherine, a lookout tower, the town hall cellars, and a monastery courtyard. The Městská věž serves as an exhibition venue and lookout point.

At the farmers’ market in Chomutov, handmade ceramics and wooden products are sold. The Oblastní muzeum in Chomutov presents permanent and temporary exhibitions on regional history and offers family activities, lectures, and workshops.

The Skanzen Stará Ves open-air museum provides an insight into historical life in the Ore Mountains, including traditional crafts and horticulture. A functioning Dutch-type windmill beside a small vineyard is a prominent feature. The permanent exhibitions on Ore Mountain crafts include lace-making, beekeeping, flax cultivation and processing, and the production of wooden toys. During the summer season, Skanzen Stará Ves is open daily; admission is covered with a valid Zoopark ticket.

Hasištejn Castle has a restaurant and a lookout tower, and cultural events are also held there.

Nature

Bezručovo údolí is a 6,500-hectare nature park in the Ore Mountains, extending from approximately 380 to 850 metres above sea level. Visitors can explore the valley on foot along marked trails or by bicycle. An asphalt path nearly seven kilometres long also runs through Bezručovo údolí to Třetí mlýn and is designed for pedestrians, cyclists, and inline skaters.

Novodomské rašeliniště is a protected peat bog reserve, a bird area, and a regular nesting site for the black grouse.

Hradiště u Černovic is a protected natural monument known for Tertiary quartzite containing plant fossils. A 240-metre-long rampart of a Bronze Age hillfort has been preserved there. A yellow hiking trail leads from Chomutov to Hradiště u Černovic.

Kýšovický vodopád is described as the highest waterfall in the Ore Mountains.

Activities

A blue hiking trail through the Údolí Prunéřovského potoka is nearly eight kilometres long. The route can be reached by car, bus, the weekend train on the Chomutov–Vejprtyline, or by bicycle.

The Podkrušnohorský zoopark Chomutov covers 112 hectares and displays around 160 animal species from the Palearctic.

Water and Winter

Kamencové jezero covers nearly 16 hectares; its alum-containing water is described as unique in the world. Camping facilities are available, with cabins as well as space for tents or caravans. The lake offers beaches, mini-golf, rental boats, pedal boats, and paddleboards, and is also used for cold-water swimming in a natural bathing environment.

The Pyšná ski resort has three slopes, a ski school, a children’s ski park, a snow park, and a groomed cross-country ski trail.
