Velké Žernoseky combines a history of winemaking with distinctive landscape features and sacred architecture.
Winegrowing and History
The early Baroque château in Velké Žernoseky was built for wine production and expanded at the end of the 18th century. Beneath the château, the wine cellars feature structural elements dating back to at least the 13th century. Žernosecké vinařství offers wine tastings in the cellars, the salon or the château’s great hall. The vineyards of Velké Žernoseky bear the historic names Kostelní, Mariánská, Malá Vendule and Velká Vendule.
Culture
The Gothic Church of St Nicholas in Velké Žernoseky was rebuilt in the 16th century and is a distinctive landmark in the landscape. Its tower dates from the 14th century and was remodelled in the Neo-Gothic style in 1881. The church has a single-nave layout with a net vault, a three-sided chancel and a sacristy added on the north side. Since 1818, the Hrádeker Festival, featuring Whitsun church services, has been held at the chapel on Hrádek.
Landscape
The rocky promontory of Kalvárie, with three wooden crosses on its summit, forms a distinctive landmark of the Česká brána. Kalvárie can be reached without access restrictions; by car, the site can be approached to within 250 metres. The Viničné domky group comprises four vineyard houses on terraces on the south-western slope of Malá Vendule and is part of the Velké Žernoseky winegrowing ensemble. The group is a characteristic landscape landmark and is probably Baroque in essence.
Trails and Excursions
The Elbe Trail leads from Litoměřice to Velké Žernoseky and onwards to Ústí nad Labem. For the most part, it runs along separate cycle paths or roads closed to motorised traffic. A green-marked hiking route leads from Velké Žernoseky through the vineyards to Kalvárie, also known as Tříkřížový vrch. On an excursion from Velké Žernoseky, you can watch a ferry carrying passengers across the Elbe.
