Chotěboř: Hotels and Accommodation
In Chotěboř, historical development, architecture and a river landscape come together.
History and Townscape
Chotěboř was elevated to the status of a royal town in 1331 after being granted the town rights of Jihlava. The urban heritage zone consists mainly of an elongated street that widens in the middle into a regular rectangular square. It includes a cemetery and the Church of St James. A Romanesque chapel previously stood on the site of today's Church of St James the Greater; its origins date back to the founding of the town. The Jewish cemetery is surrounded by a Catholic cemetery.
Culture and Architecture
The Baroque Château of Chotěboř was built in 1701–1702 and is not open to the public. The Chotěboř Town Museum offers a permanent exhibition on the Doubrava Valley, geology and the history of the town; the visit lasts 45 minutes.
The Chapel of the Elevation of the Holy Cross stands in Václav Fiala Park in Chotěboř. It is a Pseudo-Romanesque and Pseudo-Gothic building constructed in 1863 according to plans by František Schmoranz. On the eastern outskirts of Chotěboř stands the Chapel of St Anne; it was built in 1902 on the site of an earlier small chapel, based on a design by František Kruml in a Romanticizing style.
The artist Zdeněk Rykr, who was born in Chotěboř, designed the packaging for the Kofila chocolate bar.
Events
The Fantazie Festival is a traditional pop culture festival that has been held since 1996. It offers programmes on science fiction, fantasy and horror, among other topics, as well as games, film screenings, competitions, workshops, lectures, exhibitions and concerts.
