Horní Paseka: Hotels and Accommodations
Horní Paseka leads to a place where Romanesque sacred history, the landscape around the Švihov Reservoir, and paths through Melechov Nature Park meet in close proximity. The focal point is the Church of St. Vitus in Zahrádka, with its long history and unique location on the Želivka River.
History and Culture
The Church of St. Vitus in Zahrádka is originally a Romanesque church and contains partially preserved Gothic wall paintings. It is the last surviving building on the former site of Zahrádka. Its first direct documentary mention appears in a deed of donation issued by Přemysl Otakar I on June 26, 1219. Today, the church is an immovable cultural monument in the cadastral area of Horní Paseka.
Other traces also point to the history of the place: The well in the square of Zahrádka was rebuilt in 1906, when wooden pipes were replaced with stoneware pipes. In the vicinity of Horní Paseka, Melechov Fortress served to protect the historic road from Austria to Kutná Hora. Near its ruins are a tower, extensive wall remains, ditches, and a dried-up pond; the ruin is freely accessible.
The statue of the Virgin Mary was restored and returned to its original location; the original color scheme was also restored on the restored statue.
Water and Protected Area
The Church of St. Vitus stands on the shore of the Švihov Reservoir on the Želivka River. The church and cemetery in Zahrádka lie within Water Protection Zone II.
Cycling Route and Nature
The Městečko pod hladinou cycling route passes through Horní Paseka. It is 46 km long, rated as challenging, and runs mainly along forest and field tracks as well as roads.
From Horní Paseka, the Městečko pod hladinou route continues along a forest road to Křižná studánka. This is a pilgrimage site with the Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity, located deep in the forests of Melechov Nature Park in the cadastral area of the municipality of Horní Paseka. The Melechov hill area is used by mountain bikers and runners. No marked hiking trail leads to Křižná studánka.
Pilgrimages and Events
Pilgrimages take place at Křižná studánka twice a year. The Zahrádecká pilgrimage also takes place in Zahrádka (Horní Paseka–Ledeč nad Sázavou).
The program of European Heritage Days in Zahrádka includes guided tours of the Church of St. Vitus. Hradozámecká noc takes place every year in the Church of St. Vitus in Zahrádka.
