Roštejn Castle is located in the cadastral area of Doupě. The village itself lies in the valley of the Třešťský potok stream, while a large part of its cadastral area is situated in the northeastern part of the Řásenská vrchovina in the Jihlava Hills.

Culture and history

Roštejn is a Gothic-Renaissance hunting castle dating from the 14th century, with an unusual seven-sided tower on a rocky hill at an elevation of 677 metres. The castle was built continuously by the Lords of Hradec during the 14th and 15th centuries. In the immediate vicinity of Doupě, there is also the site “Roštejn [Doupě] castle outlook t.”, which is classified as a castle. The ruins of Janštejn and the Church of U Svatého Křiže are located nearby; further away in the region lies Landštejn Castle.

Nature and landscape

West of Roštejn Castle, a distinctive frost-weathering landform developed at the end of a small valley in the Roštejnská obora game preserve: a so-called nivation niche or nivation hollow. The Roštejnská obora protects old, primeval-type acidic beech forests, flower-rich beech forests and scree forests. Populations of the hermit beetle (Osmoderma barnabita) and the barbastelle bat (Barbastella barbastellus) are protected there.

The mountains of Obecní kopec, Vyštěnec, Farářský kopec and Vondrova skalka are located in the immediate vicinity of Doupě. At the western edge of Velký Pařezitý there is a nature reserve protecting wetland and peat vegetation.

Cycling route

The 70-kilometre gravel route from Telč via Doupě to Roštejn passes through the picturesque region below Javořice.
