Sudkův Důl is home to Tvrz Sudkův Důl, a late Gothic tower castle dating from around the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. Its history and the landscape of the Josafatské Valley give the village a distinctive character.

Culture and History

The late Gothic tower of Tvrz Sudkův Důl was later converted into a granary and was subsequently preserved without significant structural changes. Together with its farmyard, Tvrz Sudkův Důl forms a uniquely preserved ensemble of buildings and archaeological finds that illustrates the typical development of a lower noble residence from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.

A chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, dating from around 1800, stands in the village square. An iron cross stands in front of the Chapel of the Virgin Mary.

The stable building of Tvrz Sudkův Důl, built in 1867, was converted into a cidery in 2016. Cidery Utopia is located in an adjoining farm building within the Tvrz Sudkův Důl complex. Tvrz Sudkův Důl can be visited free of charge by prior arrangement; Cidery Utopia can also be visited by prior arrangement.

Landscape

The Josafatské Valley stretches for approximately 8 km along the Bělá River and connects the districts of Sudkův Důl, Bezděčín, and Údolí. The most interesting section of the Josafatské Valley lies between Nové Dvory and Sudkův Důl and is approximately 4 km long. The wooded slopes in the Josafatské Valley offer an abundance of wild forest fruit; the herb layer is home to numerous protected plants, particularly cowslips.
