Next to the former fortress stands the building “Památník Bible kralické”. From 1578 to 1620, a secret printing press of the Bohemian Brethren found refuge in the fortress. Until 1619, the printing press in Kralice nad Oslavou published more than 70 works, including the six-volume Bible kralická. The building “Památník Bible kralické” houses more than 4,000 original type pieces, metal letters, spacers, decorative elements, and printing utensils. Other exhibits discovered during archaeological investigations of Kralická tvrz are also on display.

Culture and History

The church “Kostel sv. Martina” is the oldest building in Kralice nad Oslavou. Its present-day sacristy dates back to a free-standing pre-Romanesque chapel from the end of the 11th century. Wall paintings from around 1300 have been preserved at the end of the presbytery, including a depiction of Saint Martin sharing his cloak with a beggar.

The “Pomník Bible kralické” monument consists of an open bronze book on an altar-like pedestal and symbolizes the translation and printing of the Bible kralická. Kralická tvrz was extensively rebuilt at the end of the first half of the 16th century; Jindřich Kralický z Kralic added three Renaissance wings to the Gothic structure.
