Šelešovice: History, Landscape and Hotels

Šelešovice combines a local history documented since the Middle Ages with a landscape along the Kotojedka watercourse. The first written mention dates from 1349. At the same time, archaeological traces, historic paths and a route across the surrounding ridges lead through different chapters of the town’s history and landscape.

Landscape

Šelešovice lies on a gentle slope descending towards the valley of the Kotojedka, also known as the Olšinka. The Kotojedka reaches Šelešovice flowing eastwards. Within the territory of Šelešovice, a stream flows into the Kotojedka from the right. This stream is not culverted from Cetechovice to Šelešovice. Thus, both the valley area and the course of the waterway are clearly identifiable landscape features of the town.

Culture and History

The historical record of Šelešovice reaches far back. A small fortress once stood here, but it has not survived. Archaeological finds from Šelešovice include a small bronze dagger from the Middle Danubian Tumulus Culture. Several Hallstatt-period graves of the Lusatian culture have been preserved, while a burial ground in the cadastral area of Šelešovice provides evidence of Slavic settlement. The archaeological site “Pod rozdíly” is designated as a settlement of the MMK II phase.

Later places of remembrance are also part of the town’s history. From 1838 onwards, a procession was held on 19 June from Šelešovice to the chapel in Nětčice in memory of a major fire. In 1920, a stone obelisk was erected as a memorial beside the district road. The coins of the Šelešovický poklad were found near the historic Hradská cesta trade route, which led from the lower to the middle Pomoraví region.

The Šelešovický poklad was found in an undeveloped part of Šelešovice. It contains a total of 342 coins and coin fragments, two small fragments of silver jewellery and a larger quantity of silver bars. The treasure is part of the exhibition “Historie ukrytá pod dlažbou města” at the Muzeum Kroměřížska.

Things to Do

A 13.6-kilometre route runs through Zdounky, Nětčice, Šelešovice and Soběsuky. It crosses two ridges and offers wide-ranging views of Kroměříž and the surrounding area, the Hostýnské vrchy and, above all, the Chřiby. For travel by train, Šelešovice railway station is on line 305 between Kroměříž and Zborovice and is part of the integrated transport system.
