Hotel in Hostějov: Chapel, Crosses and Winegrowing History

Hostějov can be explored through visible signs and handed-down traditions. Cultural traces stand alongside the landscape and details of the village’s development. The appearance of the village is shaped by individual buildings, local landmarks and its position within a larger landscape region. The various references remain clearly distinguishable: some belong to the built heritage, others to the landscape or to a tradition of events.

Culture

The most significant monument in Hostějov is a four-sided stone chapel with a bell tower, a small altar and an image of the Mother of God dating from 1866. The chapel was completely reconstructed in 2003 and declared a local monument. Another date was marked in May 2010: at that time, it was solemnly consecrated to Mary, Help of Christians. This consecration formed the basis for annual May pilgrimages. Thus, the same building brings together its form, furnishings, reconstruction and pilgrimage tradition in a shared sequence.

Several stone crosses mark further points in the village landscape. At the entrance to Hostějov stands a stone cross from 1913. Before the municipal boundary of Hostějov, there is a second cross from 1920. At the end of Hostějov in the direction of Osvětimany stands a third stone cross from 1927.

Hostějov traditionally hosts the Štěpánská zábava celebration. The event complements the architectural heritage with a handed-down cultural tradition.

Landscape and Winegrowing

The landscape places Hostějov within a broader regional context. The area around Hostějov is characterized by the hilly landscape of the Kyjovská pahorkatina, which lies between the Chřiby mountain massif and the floodplain of the Morava River. The landscape also bears a historical trace of winegrowing: in the 18th century, winegrowing developed on the estate; Hostějov had 15 měřic of vineyards.

Hiking and Views

A green-marked hiking trail passes through the cadastral territory of Hostějov. The area around Hostějov is suitable for hiking. Hostějov’s location also offers views over practically half of South Moravia. In this way, the marked trail and the wider landscape context come together.
