Culture and history
Buchlov Castle is a national cultural monument whose origins date back to the first half of the 13th century. In Staré Město stands the Velká Morava Memorial, also a national cultural monument, built over the foundations of the Na Valách church.
In Vlčnov, the Ride of the Kings is part of the tradition inscribed on the UNESCO list as “Ride of the Kings” and takes place annually. The Velká Morava exhibition in Staré Město uses life-size historical dioramas and presents the history of Great Moravia as well as the activities of its inhabitants in the 9th century. The permanent exhibition “Uherské Hradiště – royal town” covers more than 750 years of the town’s history.
The underground area in the lapidarium beneath the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Saints Cyril and Methodius in Velehrad is open to visitors. Original portals and Romanesque-Gothic archaeological finds are exhibited there.
Nature
Živá voda Modrá displays aquatic life from the Morava River ecosystem, nearby streams and ponds through a glass tunnel. The exhibition also introduces Moravian habitats, including a spring in the Chřiby Mountains, a herb garden and a floodplain forest. A wooden footbridge leads over an enclosure with aurochs.
The Chřiby Nature Park is characterized by beech forests, rock formations, springs, viewpoints and deep valleys.
Wine and rural heritage
The Muzeum v přírodě Topolná preserves folk-architecture buildings that demonstrate the typical house form of the Pomoravie region and are built from unfired bricks. Building No. 93, open to the public, presents the living conditions and furnishings of a farmstead from the late 19th century. The museum also includes exhibitions on washing and fishing, as well as a historic forge. The orchard contains a fruit-drying room and an apiary.
The Vlčnovské búdy form the largest protected reserve of above-ground wine-growing buildings in the Czech Republic. They were used for pressing, tasting and storing wine. The Museum of Folk Distilleries in Vlčnov documents the home production of slivovitz and fruit brandies on the Moravian-Slovak border. Buchlovice Chateau is an important Baroque residence surrounded by a Baroque garden.
Orientation
The Velká Morava Memorial is wheelchair accessible and has a lift and an accessible toilet. The Slovácko ethnographic exhibition at the Slovácké muzeum offers texts and audio guides in Czech, English and German and is adapted for blind and visually impaired visitors.
The Rovnina lookout tower has 127 steps. From there, the view extends across the Morava Valley, the Chřiby Mountains, the White Carpathians, the Hostýn Mountains and the Vizovice Highlands.
Paths and routes
The cycle path along the Baťa Canal has only minor changes in elevation and is described as suitable for families, seniors and inline skaters. The Uherskohradišťská Wine Trail is an easy 45-km cycling loop from Uherské Hradiště via Ostrožská Nová Ves and Vlčnov back to Uherské Hradiště.
The Velkomoravská pilgrimage route connects Great Moravian heritage with monuments from later periods. This challenging 59-km route leads from Uherské Hradiště via Cimburk and Buchlovice back to Uherské Hradiště.
The route through Modrá includes the Archeoskanzen open-air archaeological museum. The section in Modrá also includes the Živá voda freshwater exhibition.
