Šumice – Museum, Cultural Monuments and Nature

The cultural character of Šumice is particularly evident in the Šumice Museum. It is located in the attic of a historic municipal building from the 1930s and contains approximately 420 collected museum objects. The collection is presented in three thematically arranged rooms: a room corresponding to a traditional living room, a folk costume exhibition, and a room dedicated to agriculture and crafts. The current exhibition explores the lives of the inhabitants of Šumice, their folk costumes, crafts and leisure activities.

Culture

The Šumice hody are part of the local annual cycle. The celebration lasts one day, takes place today on the second Sunday in September, and is known in the surrounding area as the „dřinkové hody“. At the time of the Šumice hody, fruit ripens; in Šumice, povidla were made and fruit was dried. Thus, the celebration is associated both with a present-day date and with traditional forms of processing.

Several preserved buildings and technical monuments complement this picture. Pipalův mlýn is an important technical monument and is listed in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic. The mill preserves almost completely intact machinery and technical equipment, as well as artefacts from the lives of millers in the first half of the 20th century. Trchalíkova usedlost is an immovable cultural monument comprising a historic barn, a dower house and a carriage house. It also includes a still-functioning horse mill for powering agricultural equipment and a functioning replica of a fruit-drying barn.

Hasoňova chalupa is a preserved cottager’s or smallholder’s house with ceiling beams dated to 1839. Šerkova usedlost is one of the oldest buildings in Šumice; its history has been documented since 1777. Together with the museum, the mill and the farmsteads, these sites preserve different aspects of local life.

Nature

The Ovčírka area lies on the northern edge of Šumice. It is part of the Natura 2000 network. The Údolí Bánovského potoka area also includes the cadastral territory of Šumice u Uherského Brodu. The most valuable part of this area consists of a xerothermic meadow with individual wild pear trees and a strip of blackthorn shrubs.

The village’s bodies of water include three ponds in Šumice, which are managed for sport fishing. Thus, in addition to protected and characteristic landscape areas, the village territory also contains explicitly managed fishing waters.

Routes

The Putování po šumických pověstech route offers a viewpoint overlooking Šumice, Nezdenice and the 384-metre-high Babí hůrka mountain. The section to Nivky is considered manageable for parents with small children and for seniors. A marked route begins at Šumice railway station. A cycle path built several years ago leads to Šumice.

Connections

The railway line between Veselí nad Moravou and the Vlárský průsmyk runs through Šumice. Thus, the village landscape includes both a railway connection and a cycle path, while the marked routes and viewpoint form additional specific elements of the local route network.
