Uherské Hradiště: History, Culture and Nature

The permanent exhibition “Uherské Hradiště – město královské” presents the key events in the town’s history from its foundation in 1257 onwards. Another historical layer is revealed by the Výšina sv. Metoděje archaeological site, which includes the remains of an important ecclesiastical complex from the period of the Great Moravian Empire. On this hill, Christian missionaries built one of the first stone churches north of the Danube around the turn of the 8th and 9th centuries.

The archaeological site is freely accessible. Visitors can see a reconstructed ground plan of the ecclesiastical buildings and an information panel about the site’s history and significance. The Expozice dějin města complements the historical heritage with a virtual tour of historic Uherské Hradiště showing what the town looked like in 1670.

The Rochus Open-Air Museum is located in Uherské Hradiště-Mařatice and presents folk architecture. Its grounds include an original wooden barn relocated from Břestek and several farmsteads. The museum presents the ethnography of the Dolňácko region around Uherské Hradiště through traditional architecture, forms of housing, ways of working and living, clothing, customs and forms of folklore.

Throughout the year, recurring customs and seasonal events take place at the Rochus Open-Air Museum. These include Fašank, Easter, the raising of the maypole, the opening of the pastures, the harvest, the pilgrimage and the St Stephen’s carol singing.

The Expozice Věznice Uherské Hradiště is located in the attic of the Reduta, not in the prison building; it is not accessible to people with disabilities. Photographs and text panels in Czech present stories from the history of the prison during the totalitarian Nazi and Communist regimes.

The Joži Uprka Gallery displays representative works from the collections of Nadace Moravské Slovácko, Národní galerie v Praze, Moravské galerie v Brně, Galerie výtvarného umění v Olomouci, Krajské galerie ve Zlíně and Římskokatolické farnosti ve Strážnici. On the last Saturday of each month, visitors can take part in a guided tour of the exhibition accompanied by a curator.

Rochus Park has been part of the Natura 2000 network since 2005. It is home to more than 100 bird species and 50 butterfly species. Aquapark Uherské Hradiště offers swimming and leisure pools, saunas and relaxation areas.
